Hugo: A Utopia directed by Sophia Marathaki was first presented in October 2017 in the Upper Stage of Onasis Cultural Center of Athens. The play will be presented along with other contemporary Greek productions in Ludwigshafen, Germany at the Theater im Pfalzbau as part of the Nach Athen! festival.
The performance will take place on October 17, 2018
Taking Victor Hugo's “Hymn to a United Europe” as her starting point, Marathaki creates a performance focuses on utopia and the reality of Europe in the era of humanism. During this period, what was emerging was not a Europe of nations but a “Europe of kings”, wrote the great poet, novelist and visionary, Victor Hugo in the mid-19th century.
Marathaki asks "What is Europe?", but also "What could Europe be?" if the revolution of 1789 and those that followed had achieved their goal.
