Homer’s Iliad is being staged for the very first time globally with Stathis Livathinos directing all 24 books. Re-worked as drama, the Iliad – a classic, seminal work of the celebrated culture of Ancient Greece – is subjected to a modern artistic gaze. It is precisely this merging of the classical and the contemporary that interests us and that we are highlighting – in a balanced and authentic conjunction where the one doesn’t undermine the other, but reinforces it to stir and stimulate today’s spectator both aesthetically and intellectually.

The premiere took place in a large warehouse at the Athens and Epidaurus Festival in June 2013. Due to its great success it was presented again in the same space, followed by the inauguration of the Municipal Theatre of Piraeus, a three month run in Athens and a summer tour in select and open-air theatres in Greece.

The international tour started at the National Theatre of Amsterdam, Stadsshouwburg Amsterdam and so far has included the International Theatre Festival of Mérida, Spain where the Iliad was the only international production to be invited and the Centro Dramático Nacional in Madrid where it was one of the only five shows to participate at “A Look At the World” section amongst the Munich Kammerspiele, the Théâtre Quat’Sous, the National Theatre of Mexico and Cheek by Jowl with Moscow Pushkin Drama Theatre. Moreover, the tour has included the CINARS Biennale in Montreal, the Santiago A Mil Festival in Chile which along with the Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam and the Centro Dramático Nacional have never before presented a theatre show from Greece. Most recently the Iliad was presented on the closing night of the Sibiu International Festival with a very warm reception and a remarkably long and moving standing ovation.

The Iliad has been presented in a great variety of spaces and sizes. Every performance is a new challenge, a new adaptation that brings forth fresh elements. The full duration of the performance is 3 hours and 15 minutes.
